Jetta gets AMP’d…

For Christmas my very thoughtful brother gave me something I’ve always wanted but been too wishy-washy to get myself, an AMP and killer speaker box to bump the bass in my car.  =)

I was a bit aprehensive about modifying my car at all because I am so happy with it but this turned out awesome.  Jeffery started the install the week before and got the power run to the back of the car but ran out of time and had to come back last Friday evening to finish the job.

It's not exactly comfortable but it works. Jeffery figures out where to position the amp.

In order to mount the amp so the screws don't go through the carpeting Jeffery had to remove it before installation.

Jeffery had to remove the back seat and siding in order to snake the speaker wire to the front seat. He got everything back where it belonged though. Great job Lil' Brudda. 😉

By 11:30pm Jeffery had gotten everything installed and put back together so after jumping the car (leaving the doors open drained the battery) we headed out to get the amp dialed in for just the right amount of bass.  At first the system sounded TERRIBLE because it was playing all audio through the speaker, not just the bass.  After we pulled over so Jeffery could adjust the levels things started sounding good, really good.  So good I couldn’t stop laughing.  I couldn’t believe how rockin’ my car sounded.  Sweet… =)

Thanks to my little brother for a very thoughtful Christmas gift and for doing a great job installing it in my Jetta.  Next up a new deck so I can take full advantage of the new addition to my car.  😉

Happy New Year!!…

New Moon. New Year. Happy New Year Everyone. =)

Despite being super tired the last couple of weeks Marshall and I made it to midnight this New Year’s and thank goodness too otherwise I would have missed this, a full blue moon.  Hurray!  =)

Merry Christmas!! =)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Lotus and the rest of the family. =)

I can’t believe another Christmas has come and gone already.  I have to admit, Christmas totally snuck up on me this year so the last week has kind of been a blur.  Marshall and I started shopping last Saturday and finished Christmas Eve day.  We then began the long  and then 7+ hours of driving within 48 hours to visit the family.  =)

First we headed to my Uncle John and Aunt Tiffany’s in San Ramon.

Marshall and Me. =)

Santa visited us and we sang my favorite “Merry Christmas to You” which is essentially “Happy Birthday” (another Hollfelder favorite).

Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas to you, Merry Christmas dear Santa, Merry Christmas to you... =)

Hmm, wonder where Dad was when Santa came…  Oh there he is.  =)

Dad and me. Best dad in the world. =)

Jeffery made me laugh with his ridiculous “My Cousin Vinny” impersonation.  I’m still laughing.

First we're gonna get like 45 of the same pictures and then we're gonna put them on the paper. =)

After opening presents Marshall riled the kids up by pretending to eat candy that they had given me.  He also started a wrapping paper fight which I’m sure my aunt and uncle didn’t appreciate.  Fortunately nothing got broken.  He’s such a big kid.  =)

Marshall really had the kids going pretending to want the basket that the girls used to hand out Christmas raffle prizes. What a silly guy. =)

Thank goodness this was just a piece of wrapping paper as Jeena's dead-on accuracy beaned Marshall and the camera a split second after this picture was taken.

After a couple of family pictures it was time to get back on the road so we could pick up the dogs and head to Twainharte to see Marshall’s family.

The cousins: Robyn, Tessa, Jeena and Neomie

We're a totem pole. Hiya-hiya... =)

It was about 9:30pm when we finally got on the road to Twainharte.  Fortunately there was very little traffic so I was able to get there in 2 hours (seriously, 2 hours).  Marshall fell asleep when we were driving through Manteca but he had put Caddyshack on so I had that to listen to.  Ah I love that movie.  =)

We arrived at Marshall’s parents around 11:30 and after getting the dogs settled we watched about an hour of “17 again” with his parents, sister and her boyfriend Kyle then headed to bed.  We had an early morning followed by a long day of driving to prepare for.  So sleepy…

Around 7am I woke up and checked on the dogs.  The sun had already started to come up so Marshall and I took them outside to use the bathroom and get some nice pictures of them in the snow.

Marshall and Lotus =)

Sierra and me =)

Next it was time for Christmas presents Marshall’s family.  Since camera flashes set of migraines for Jack I was only able to take one picture.  Fortunately it’s an awesome picture of Marshall and his family.  =)

Marshall, Lori, Jack and Andrea. Merry Christmas guys. =)

Everyone gave incredibly thoughtful gifts and we all had a great Christmas morning.  After presents, breakfast, and some IT support to get Lori’s scanner working we had to leave to go to my grandma Gillott’s in Salinas (about a 3.5-4hour drive).  Thanks for everything you guys.  We love you!

The drive to Salinas was a long one but everything worked out and we were welcomed with open arms upon arriving at Grandma’s.  Ah I love Grandma’s.  =)

While waiting for the rest of the family to arrive we snacked on delicious food that Grandma had prepared including a bunch of different types of cookies and pastries.  Delicious!  Then it was time for presents with the family.

One of the few times Grandma actually sat down to relax with the family. The rest of the time she was working to prepare the Christmas feast. =)

Merry Christmas Mom and Dad. =)

After dinner Jeriah, Heather, Jeffery, Grandma, my mom and Marshall played a game of Pictionary (my grandma’s favorite) while I read my new Photography book and worked on a 3D puzzle.

Pictionary! Marshall and my mom made a good team. =)

Finally it was time to head back home.  Marshall had to work the next day so I wanted to make sure he had plenty of rest and got to sleep in his own bed.  Fortunately Marshall has no problem falling asleep in the car when I’m driving so he got a nice little nap on the way home.

Although we would have loved to have been able to spend more time with everyone, I was very grateful that we got to see all the families.  I know it’s tough on Marshall’s family especially so perhaps we’ll do Christmas Eve at their house next year.  We’ll see.  Anyway, thanks to our families for a wonderful Christmas.  Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!  =)

More Jetta work and tortilla soup…

This morning Heather called me at work to tell me that she had made tortilla soup and ask would I be interested in having her over to share the meal.  Uh, yeah!  😉

Heather met me at my house and immediately got to preparing the meal.  It’s times like this that I wish I could cook.

Heather heats up the tortilla soup she made last night and prepares slices of avacado, sour cream and cilantro to add on top. Mmmm... =)

It tasted even better than it looked (I know, is that even possible?). =)

Heather also invited Jeffery over so the four of us got to enjoy a wonderful home cooked meal while watching episodes of Police Squad (hilarious) and Stacked (always good for a laugh).

Heather, Jeffery and Me

After dinner Jeffery offered to install the lock chassis that just arrived for the Jetta.  After breaking yet another piece we at least got the automatic trunk unlock function working.  Hurray!  Thanks Jeffery.

At this point it was about 7:30 and Heather and Jeffery had headed home.  Since I wanted to fix the trunk lock and glove box door at the same time I decided to break out my Jetta manual and get started.  It was way more complicated than I had originally thought but that didn’t deter me.  First up, removing the front console.

In order to remove the console I had to take out 5 screws, remove the lighter and change drawer, take off the automatic shift knob and then carefully rock the plastic housing until the tabs released.  Ok I admit, I did snap a few plastic pieces.  The car is almost 10 years old so the plastic is brittle.

I can't believe I actually decided to strip the car down to this level. I hope it all goes back together ok.

The whole reason for removing the console was to get at this one screw that held the glovebox in place. Thank goodness I had the manual otherwise I probably would have just snapped this piece off not knowing it was actually screwed in.

So all that work was just to be able to get access to a screw....one screw.... That's a lot of work for one screw (tewwible!). 😉

Seven more screws to release the glove box and then I was finally able to tackle replacing the front door.

I spent over an hour trying to get the old door off and then new one secured in place. Turns out that the holes on the hinges of the door were too small and off center so the pins wouldn’t go in. After giving up on the brute force approach I grabbed my Makita and drilled out the holes so they’d accommodate the pins. Success!!

Ignore the RAID in the background. Yeah, we have ants again. Boo... =P

After about 3 hours of scratching up my knuckles and letting out more curse words than I care to admit I was finally able to get the Jetta back together and looking pretty good might I add.  It was a lot of work but totally worth it.  =)

Looks good right? =)

Although I was a bit bummed about not installing the trunk lock bracket myself I completely forgot about that after tackling the glovebox.  It was a huge challenge and I did it!!  Now I just need to fix the leaky radiator problem (I’ll probably have to take the car in to the shop for that but at least all the other parts are fixed now).  Until the next Jetta crisis this is Jettagirl saying Peace Out and VW for life.  Goodnight!  =)

Yeah you know you're rolling hard when you're driving a Jetta. VW 4 Life baby. What what?! =)

It’s cold as a “you know what”…

In case you were wondering how cold it was in Livermore this morning, might I offer the following pictures as a response.  =)

Crazy right? I have the faucet set to slowly drip into the water bowl to keep it full for the dogs. Guess it was slow enough to create this reverse icicle. =)

And just in case you thought the above picture was of water splashing up from the bowl, here's a closer look. Yeah, that's cold!

Sierra shown for scale. 😉 Oh and check it out, you can see the start of another drop of water that will ultimately add to the growing icicle that has formed.

I’m going to have to get a jacket for Lotus since her fur is so short and it’s so dang cold outside.  Sierra has a nice fluffy coat right now so I think she’s fine.  Isn’t that right Muppy.  =)

Thanksgiving 2009…

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! =)

Thanksgiving was at my Grandma Gillott’s again this year and as always, it was wonderful.  =)  Grandma made an awesome meal of succulent turkey paired with mashed potatoes, carrots, cole slaw, stuffing and gravy.  So delicious!!  But I’m getting ahead of myself (again).

While my grandma worked on dinner in the kitchen, Marshall, my dad and uncles played a couple games of Pinochle in the living room.

Marshall, my dad, Uncle Tom and Uncle Tim playing a traditional game of Pinochle before dinner.

Amazingly Marshall and my Uncle Tom beat my Uncle Tim and Dad at Pinochle. Check that man's sleeves!! 😉

While the guys played cards, Heather, Jeffery and I hung out with the cousins and our dogs.  It would have been great to have a family photo with everyone and their baby dogs but that didn’t happen.  Instead I got a few cute shots of them here.

Hey, it's Classic Sierra (get it?). =)

Lotus!!

Little Girl (Mom and Dad's dog)

Winnie (Heather and Jeriah's dog)

Froggy Leykis (Jeffery's dog)

Apollo (Cousin Alli and Mitchell's dog)

Playing with the puppies was a lot of fun and so was playing with the settings on my camera.  I think Sierra looks quite nice in black and white, don’t you?  =)

After dinner Marshall played another game of cards while my sister, mom and I helped do dishes.  We chatted a bit more after that and then it was time to hit the road.  All in all Thanksgiving was awesome.  Thanks for another wonderful Thanksgiving Grandma.  =)

Mt. Diablo in the fall (16.3 miles)…

A couple of weeks ago I went on another hike with “V” and the guys to Mt. Diablo.  Joining us were my buddies Ilya, Magda, Jackie and Craig.  The hike was 16.3 miles and started off at the Castle Rock staging area.

Trailhead

The hike started at the Castle Rock Regional Park entrance around 9:45.

The trail started off easy enough (the first few miles normally are) so Magda attempted her infamous cattle gate vault.  In the interest of full disclosure I should say she also did the vault at the end of the hike.  That girl is crazy strong!  =)

Magda preparing for her big trick.

Up and over (and with a backpack too, crazy!). I give her a 7.5 out of 10. Keep working on getting fully vertical Magda. 😉

About half way up the mountain a biker that we had offered encouragement to as he huffed and puffed up a steep hill offered to take a group photo for us when we ran into him further up the hill as he took a break.

Jackie prefers not to have her picture taken so although she was actually in the shot to the right, I cropped her out.

Further up the hill where we had to walk single file on a narrow path cut through the grasses we encountered the first animal (alive!) of the day.  It was a baby rattlesnake and it struck at the leather boot of the guy in front of me.  I immediately stopped, shouted for the people behind me to stop and then dropped in low to get a picture.  Come on, I never pass up a photo op.  😉

A rattlesnake! Lucky I wasn't the target of this snakes bite. With my regular tennis shoes on he might have actually hit skin. =P

Before I knew it we had reached the summit.  It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re having fun.  =)

Beautiful views from the summit of Mt. Diablo.

On the way back down “V” pointed out this guy, a rat that was extremely curious and walked right up to me.  Methinks he may have been a bit rabid since you normally don’t see rats wandering around in the middle of the day.  I was worried he was actually going to try and climb up my leg thinking I was a tree or something so after snapping a few pictures I said goodbye and continued on down the trail.

Magda jokingly said "Oh I'm sorry Jenny. You're having such bad luck today, all the animals are alive.." Yeah I know, I normally only get pictures of live animals. That's only because dead animals don't run away from you. 😉

The hike was a lot of fun and a great workout.  I can’t wait until the next one..  =)

Weekend at Grandma’s…

GrandmasBackyard

Weekend at Grandma's... always a pleasure. =)

This weekend I had invited my mom to go hiking with me, “V” and the SOC group in Gilroy and then head to my Grandma’s in Salinas for a visit.  When my mom didn’t call to confirm on Friday evening I figured she wanted to let the whole thing slide…then I got a call at 7:15am on Saturday morning.  😉

Instead of doing the hike with “V” we decided to head straight down to my grandma’s.  I liked this idea a lot more because I could bring Sierra and spend more time with my grandma.   I haven’t seen my grandma since Easter so it’s been too long.

Since my grandma wasn’t expecting us until later she almost had a heart attack when I yelled “Surprise!!”  She was still busy cleaning and preparing freshly made spaghetti sauce from home grown tomatoes so my mom helped her in the kitchen and I headed out to the backyard to take some pictures and talk with my Uncle Tim.

Tomatoes

My grandma has the greenest thumb. Not literally green, although I haven't actually checked... hmm...

Volunteer

That whole sprawling plant is a tomato plant that started as a volunteer and just took over from there. Seriously, there must be something in the water. 😉

My Uncle Tim also has a green thumb and uses it to grow wicked hot peppers.  In addition to growing hot peppers my uncle has also written some amazing QBasic programs, has PI memorized to 1000 places (he’s recited off two full pages of numbers to me, no joke), and can probably out hike me even with me doing bodypump and backpacking trips.   But back to the peppers.  =)

HotPeppers

They look pretty harmless right? WRONG!! Merely touching ones finger to the cracked skin of these peppers and then touching your tongue results in several minutes of extreme burn.

YellowPeppers

My brother had grown these peppers from seed and gave the plants to my uncle. Looks like they're doing quite well. =)

My uncle takes great pride in the heat of his peppers so after having fun seeing my reaction to following his instructions to put my finger on the cracked skin of his hottest pepper and then touch my tongue he egged me to eat a good-sized piece of the pepper.  Was he insane?  Would I die if I actually ate a piece?  The answer to both questions is “No” so despite the fact that my mom was fearing for my well being and telling me not to do it I followed suite after watching my uncle pop a piece into his mouth.  For the next 5 minutes we kept pointing and laughing at each other as we coughed, eyes welling up with tears from the intensity of the burn.  Ah, good times, good times…  =)

After playing with fire in the form of hot peppers I decided on a less dangerous game.  I know I take after my mom in a lot of respects and also share many of my dad’s traits (not to mention his physical features…we both have piggy noses and grandma hands).  As I looked around my grandma’s sunroom however I realized that I also have a lot in common with my grandma and uncles as well.  First there was the dead things box and yeah, it’s just what it sounds like.  =)

BoneBoxes

Check it out, my grandma has a collection of bones and other dead things collected over 40 years ago when my uncles would bring them home from the creek as kids. Sweet!

HornedLizard

The box on top contains dried out snake skins, birds nest with abandoned eggs and this guy, a perfectly preserved horned lizard. I love it! =)

Skulls

The box on the bottom contains the skulls and jawbones of several different animals. I think it's very neat to be able to see the skeletal features of animals up close. It's all in the name of science. SCIENCE! =)

Then there was this awesome hand sculpted dinosaur (there are actually several) that my grandma has stomping around a prehistoric environment of succulents.  I’m not sure if my grandma made this or possibly one of her students when she taught elementary school for 30+ years.  Either way, it’s SO cool!  =)

Dinosaur

Raar!!! I'm a dinosaur with short little T-Rex arms. Fear me!! =)

I just thought it was cool to be able to see some of what I consider to be my weird little quirks and preferences kind of showcased in the form of these displays created by my grandma and uncles so many years ago.  =)

After an afternoon of chatting and hot pepper eating it was time for a delicious home cooked meal of spaghetti, salad with fresh home grown cherry tomatoes and bread.  I had been good and only ate an apple at lunch and didn’t snack on junk food before dinner so the meal was absolutely amazing.  Seriously, best dinner ever.  =)

After dinner my mom, grandma and I watched “The Glass Bottom Boat” with Doris Day (very funny) and then it was time to head to bed.  Sunday came and went all too quickly.  My grandma had to leave for church around 9 so my mom and I packed up the car and left around 8:30.  It was a wonderful trip and just like my grandma’s home-cooked meals, they always leave me looking forward to the next one.  Until then, the pictures below will have to hold me over.  =)

UncleTim

Uncle Tim harvests more of his peppers for pickling. He also makes a sweet pepper jam that my parents love on pancakes and toast.

HotPepperPlants

Until we meet again hottest of the hot pepper plants. You were a worthy adversary but ultimately you were bested by my stomach acid. 😉

Pansies

My grandma's back yard is like a secret garden to me because it backs up to trees that line the creek and contains some of the most beautiful flowers and landscaping I've ever seen. It always makes me feel at home.

Thanks for having us over Grandma.  I had a wonderful time and can’t wait until Thanksgiving.  Mmm, turkey, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy…yeah, I can’t wait!  =)

Houston, we have a problem…

This last weekend I went to pop the trunk of my Jetta and was saddened to find that nothing happened.  I could hear the latch apparatus doing something so at least the electronics part seemed to be working but yeah, no dice.  =(

Being that my Jetta is very important to me and I really like being able to use the trunk I decided that I would attempt to identify and fix the problem myself.  So tonight, armed with a backpacking headlamp, a screwdriver and a bowl to hold the screws, I shimmied through a folded down seat in the back row of the Jetta and into the trunk to begin removing the carpeted interior.

TrunkInterior

Although it was a bit cramped in there, it didn't take too long to remove the 13 screws and get a closer look at what was going on.

Latch

This is an up close of the broken latch assembly. When working properly the arm to the left of the white locking mechanism pushes the black lever to lift the latch and unlock the trunk.

BrokenLatch

???Unfortunately the black lever is made of plastic (lame!) and finally cracked after 9 years of service. With the latch lever hanging on by a thread it was only a matter of time before it fell off completely. Boo... =(

Problem

After getting an up close and personal look at how the locking mechanism works it appears I should be able to unlock the trunk by turning the key clockwise (counter clockwise just engages the electronic lock). I'll have to replace some parts to give that a try.

I was hoping I could jury rig something to get the locking mechanism working again but it was not to be, well at least not without additional resources (like crazy glue perhaps).  I also tried to remove the metal mounting from the trunk so I could see about replacing the whole thing however I would have needed deeper sockets to get around the screws.  My brother has the right tools so I’m going to see if he can let me borrow them tomorrow to finish this up.

With no other options for fixing the trunk I guess it’s over and out from Jettagirl for now.  I’ll write more when I have an update on the status of my car.  =)

Lotus and Pig-Pig…

A couple of weeks ago Heather stopped by the house and happened to have her camera on her.  The following events captured on film (well an SD card) show the evolution of Lotus and Pig-Pig’s dynamic from alpha pig and submissive dog to best buddies for life.  =)

LookAtMe

Don't look now Lotus but there is a pig on your shoulder. I think it wants your bone!

StalkerPig

He's getting closer. Watch out Lotus!!

StaringContest

Oh it's on now. Lotus, you know what you have to do.

Friends

Aw, that's right. Snuggle up with Pig-Pig. Lotus and Pig-Pig: Best friends for life. =)

Two days later Pig-Pig had been reduced to piles of stuffing strewn around the living room but it was nice while it lasted.  “Pig-Pig would have wanted it this way…” – (sort of Homer Simpson)  =)

A very “Sierra” Halloween…

A couple weekends ago Sierra and I went over to my sisters to do crafts and watch Halloween movies (cute spooky Halloween movies, Sierra and I don’t like scary movies).  =)

Heather likes to get costumes for her doggies so in between “The Haunted Mansion” and “Clue” we played dress up with Sierra.  She wasn’t digging it to much but I thought she was a-dorable!  First she was a friendly moo cow.

SierraCow

Wait, is that a cow? No, it's Sierra! =)

SierraCow2

What a silly cow. Sierra, take that off. =)

Next Heffies dressed Sierra up as a good witch.

GoodWitch

Sierra was refusing to look at the camera. Hmm, maybe she was more of a "naughty puppy" witch.

SierraNMeJPG

Look, I have no makeup and greasy hair so we both look ridiculous so SMILE Sierra. No? Well you still look cute. =)

From Sierra and me, Happy Halloween Everyone!!  =)

Tilden/Sibley/Redwood Regional Parks Hike…

Hurray for fall hikes! Thanks to Valerie and “V” I got to go on another great hike with the Society of Outdoor Cardinals where we traversed three really awesome regional parks including Tilden, Sibley and Redwood.

GroupPhoto

This is our crew (all 16 of us). This was a shuttle hike so we'd all have to fit into a car that seats 7 and a car that seats 5. I was one of the drivers so at least I had room. 😉

The plan was to start at the Steam Trains parking lot at Tilden Regional Park, shuttle some cars to our final destination (Redwood Regional Park) and then embark on our 18+ mile.  I’ve been on one hike with Valerie before and besides being an amazing hiker, she is also an incredible historian and enjoys sharing her knowledge with the rest of us.  Although it took more time because of all the stops it was awesome to learn more about the geology and history of the area.  Thanks Valerie.  =)

There were a lot of beautiful things to see along this trail.

Thistles

Beautiful fall thistles...

BeautifulFungus

My favorite picture of the day. I love the blue, oranges and browns. Same color as the scarf I bought at the Pumpkin Festival last year. =)

And some nature inspired signs of the season including a haunted house, well outhouse (I think it was haunted, I think I may have seen a ghost..ok, I didn’t but still).  =)

HauntedOuthouse

Ooo, it's a spooky old outhouse. With it being Halloween I think my imagination was a little more active than normal. =)

The hike was quite enjoyable and I was sad when we had to end it a bit early to accommodate Valerie’s social plans for the evening.  We made it about 14 miles in 7 hours and had a lot of fun.

MeHiking

Enjoying time beneath a canopy of rustling leaves and overarching branches.

After shuttling everyone back to their cars I started back down the road to CA-24.  Along the way I stopped briefly to capture the setting sun looking out over Grizzly Peak Blvd.  Really beautiful…

Sunset

The setting sun sparkles over the bay from a turnout on Grizzly Peak Blvd.

As always, thanks to “V” and Valerie, our trip leaders, for a fantastic hike.  I can’t wait until the next trip.  =)

Del Valle in the fall…

DelValleFall

Lake Del Valle through the trees...

This last weekend Marshall was nice enough to take Sierra, Lotus and me to Del Valle for a nice little hike.  Fall has arrived in Del Valle and it’s absolutely beautiful.  I love it!  =)

Marshall isn’t exactly the hiker type (ok, he “greatly dislikes” hiking) but he still goes out with me because he knows how much I enjoy it.  To make the hikes more enjoyable for him he likes to listen to a TV show or book on tape on his iPhone (hence the FBI style ear piece he’s sporting with Lotus below).

MarshallNLotus

Big pimpin' pimpin'...

I had seen, and picked up (yep, picked up) two tarantulas on Saturday and was hoping to see a tarantula on our hike but no such luck.  Instead I found this, an unfortunate toad who appeared to have gotten squashed and then was drying in the sun.  A spooky sighting to prepare for Halloween which is this upcoming Saturday.

UnluckyFrog

Very unlucky frog. Normally I like seeing dead things (because I get to see these animals up close) but this one made me kind of sad. Sorry toady... =(

All in all we had a very nice hike.  I even got a picture of Marshall and me and he’s smiling!  =)

MarshallNJen

Smile for me Marshall, it's not so bad. =)

I’m off for an 18+ mile hike tomorrow at Tilden Park led by “V” and Valerie.  Should be a lot of fun and hopefully I’ll get some more great pictures of the beautiful outdoors in fall.  Goodnight…  =)

Somewhere over the rainbow…

Ok, so I just made a reference to the Wizard of Oz.  Sue me.  😉

Using my new camera and the PhotoStitch software I was able to capture this full rainbow right above my house.  Unfortunately I wasn’t familiar enough with how to take the pictures that I didn’t get as much of the house in the picture and you can still see a seam.  Still, not bad.  =)

Thank goodness I forgot my badge on the way to work otherwise I wouldn't have had the chance to take a picture of this amazing rainbow. =)

Thank goodness I forgot my badge on the way to work otherwise I probably would have passed up the opportunity to head back and take a picture of this amazing rainbow. Oh and that's my house underneath the rainbow BTW. =)

Robyn’s 13th Birthday…

I can hardly believe it but my little cousin Robyn is turning 13.  Although Robyn’s birthday is actually Monday, my Aunt Tiffany and Uncle John hosted a family party on Saturday so we could all get together.

My dad, big brother to my Uncle Greg and Uncle John.

Next it was on to the pull up bars and swing set so Jeena and Tessa could show me their gymnast skills (and wait, is that Marshall?).

Hey, I like doing this too! =)

Ok, now Jeena and Tessa are actually holding real pull-ups. Guess who's standing on their feet. ;)

After dinner Marshall and Robyn happened to start talking about Pokemon to which Marshall said “Hey, do you want [insert good Pokemon character here]?”  Marshall plays Pokemon all the time for relaxation (hey no judging here, I watch crap shows on VH1 like Real Chance of Love and the like) so he didn’t mind parting with his best players.  With as much as he plays he’ll probably have those characters back in a couple days.  Plus it made Robyn really happy.  =)

For Robyn's birthday, Marshall gave Robyn a few of his prize Pokemon which Robyn seemed to really enjoy when they battled after dinner with her new team. =)

After dinner, presents and cake it was time for Marshall and I to head out to Tracy to check on Heather’s horses.  Heather and Jeriah went to Disneyland so we’re watching their 3 dogs and had to feed the horses once while they were gone.  When we got to the house we found a water geyser shooting out of her pool house.  The back pasture was flooded.  =(

When we attempted to flip on the barn lights nothing happened so Marshall had to use his game boy to light our way.  He immediately headed through the 6 inches of swampy horse crap and mud into the hissing pool house to see if he could figure out how to shut off the leak.  After about 5 minutes the barn lights flipped on and I freaked out thinking something had happened to Marshall and that he was arcing an electrical circuit causing the lights to flip on.  I yelled to him a couple of times and he finally came out saying he had been flipping switches inside the pool house thinking that might stop the flow of water through the broken pipe when one turned on the outside lights.  He realized at that point that he probably shouldn’t be in a flooded pool room with a live electrical panel there.  Good call.  😉

We finally got the situation under control after calling my brother who reminded us that Heather is on well water so we just need to turn off the electrical circuit for the well pump and we’d be good.  Using the gameboy for light Marshall located the electrical panel on the side of Heather’s house and flipped the switch to the well.  The geyser stopped.  Hazzah!…  Great job Marshall.  Time to head back home and get to bed.  Goodnight!  =)

Welcome to the Pumpkin Festival (only a few more miles and about 2 hours of driving). 😉

Hurray so it’s October which means the Hollfelder’s yearly trek to Half Moon Bay for the Pumpkin Festival.  Yep, every third weekend in October since I was a little kid my parents would load up the kids and make the long trip to the coast.  If we left super early in the morning we could make it in about 45 minutes.  Unfortunately as we grew up and no longer participated in the children’s parade and costume contest we began leaving later which meant anywhere between an hour to two hour drive to get to the festival.  This year I think we achieved a personal best with 2.5 hours for 35 miles (average of 14mph).  Craziness.

I happily played chauffeur for the day and Meems took over taking pictures on our 2.5 hour trip to Half Moon Bay.

After getting into a slightly heated discussion with my mom about letting people live their lives and “to each his own” I encouraged my mom to check out my camera.  Within minutes she was completely absorbed with taking pictures of everything and everyone within range (Ooo, shiney!.. she’s just like me).  😉

I asked her to take a picture of the place where 5-6 years ago my dad had to pull over so I could, um, “use the restroom” when I couldn’t hold it any longer (note, the portable toilet was not there when this happened several years ago).  =(

I wonder if I was in the inspiration for putting a portable toilet at this turnout. Man that would have come in handy several years ago. ;)

I also asked her to take a picture of the pampas grass because I thought it looked cool against the blue sky (she stuck both arms out the side window to get this shot).

I love this shot. All askew and yet it looks natural to me. Nice picture Meems. =)

Of course there were tons of pictures of the family which got old after awhile apparently.

Grumpy at sitting in traffic and my mom taking so many pictures, my dad strikes a mean muggin' face.

Since everyone was avoiding the camera my mom had to get sneaky and started doing point-and-shoot shots under her arm.  This one actually came out pretty good.  It had me laughing hysterically.  =)

Ha! Gotcha! =)

Ha! Gotcha! =)

And who do we have to thank for all these great pictures?  Why it’s none other than the famous photographer Meemers!!  =)

Great pictures Meemers. And nice workout shirts. ;)

Since traffic was so backed up I took the camera and shot a couple pictures including this super sweet one of a metal thestril.  And now on to the festival.  =)

Cool metal thestril welcomes festival goers. Awesome. =)

The arts and crafts at the festival were really great this year.  I found an amazing felted hat that I fell in love with and bought, and Marshall found a very cute sculpture of a Doberman that we convinced him to purchase.  My dad started a tradition that I fight at first but ultimately acquiesce to which is that he gives each one of the kids $100 to purchase something special for ourselves.  Very generous and so thoughtful.  Thanks Dad.  =)

I normally greatly dislike hats but something about this one called out to me. After walking the entire festival I finally decided I wanted to get the hat with the money my dad had given me. Thanks Dad. I love the hat. =)

We also saw Farmer Mike who carves amazing (although kinda scary) pumpkins each year.

Farmer Mike has been carving pumpkins for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until 3 years ago that we finally started noticing a few grey hairs. Seriously, that guy doesn't age! It must be the unicorn blood. ;)

Finally it was time to head back to the car so we could make a 5pm dinner reservation for the Moss Beach Distillery.  Heather had suggested we go to the Distillery after the Pumpkin Festival last year and we enjoyed ourselves so much we have added that to the tradition.  Hurray for another great time at the Pumpkin Festival.  =)

Dinner at the Distillery was amazing as always.  We started out with delicious steamed mussels and went through 3 baskets of bread sopping up the best part of the dish, the buttery, well seasoned juices.  Heather and I had the same thing we had last year, a succulent seafood medley over linguine and Marshall ordered filet mignon with cheesy potatoes that he enjoyed much more than the dish he had last year (thank goodness).  =)

After dinner we feeling good so we took the opportunity to take some family photos.  First up, Mom and Dad.

They may fight like cats and dogs at times but they still love each other. =)

Next, Heffies and me.

What, what!? =)

What, what!? =)

After Marshall took this picture my mom said “Marshall, take a picture length-wise” to which I jokingly added “Yeah, do it right Marshall.”  Marshall responded by then starting to randomly snap pictures and talk with a “Bruno-esque” accent saying “Oh, I don’t even know what I’m doing.  I’m an arteest.  It’s crazy.  It’s madness. ”  I endulged in playing Marshall’s “model” and couldn’t stop laughing which led to this series of pictures.  Gotta love it…  =)

Work it!

Oh I'm being so playful!

Ok I can't take this anymore. My sides are splitting and so are Heather's. =)

Oh man, I needed a laugh workout after that meal.  Thanks Marshall.  =)

Aw, you're the best photographer Marshall. And you make me laugh like crazy. =)

After that it was time to head back home.  I think this may have been the best Pumpkin Festival ever.  Thanks Mom and Dad for treating us to a wonderful dinner and a great time with my family.  I love you guys!  =)

Jettagirl vs. “The Yard” (2009)…

So about this time of year when my joints become increasingly creaky with the threat of rain in the distance (yep, I’m so old my joints can foretell storms), I feel a tinge of guilt for neglecting my yard knowing that soon it will be too late to do anything once the rain turns it into a swampy mess.  So in the wee hours of a what would have been a lazy Sunday I lay in bed making a plan of attack and psyching myself up for the intense physical effort this would take.

First on my list was the front yard.  I knew I wanted to trim back the shrubs, cut down unruly branches from the birch that has taken over a corner of the yard, mow the lawn and generally tidy things up so it looked nice.  As I was working on trimming back the shrubs I realized I should also cut back the oleander that separates my driveway from my neighbors.  We have to back the Freestyle in so you can get out since they take up so much room and I’m constantly driving the car into the scratchy branches (eh, it’s not like it’s the Jetta or anything).  😉

Here’s what it looked like before.

I mean it's not so bad to look at, it just seems to cause more problems than it's worth.

I mean it's not so bad to look at, it just seems to cause more problems than it's worth.

As I was working to trim back and thin the oleanders, my neighbor Rob opened his garage door which happened to be right after I had over thinned a section of the hedge nearest the garages.  I said hi and then leadingly asked, “Hey, so what do you think of these oleanders?..” Rob said, “I don’t really like them.”  To which I responded, “Me neither!  I hate them!!  Can I cut them down?”  =)

I barely waited for Rob to say “Yeah!” and 30 minutes later I had cut down every branch.  Ah, that felt good…  =)

Totally demolished with one pair of extra heavy duty bypass loppers. Ah, so satisfying... =)

The easy part was cutting this down. Now we had to haul it to Rob's backyard. 5 truckloads!

After clearing out the oleander branches (Rob was nice enough to let us put the clippings in his side yard until we could figure out how to dump them properly) I went back to the shrubs, tree and moving of the lawn.  Here’s what that looked like before.

What a mess. The large shrub always scratched my arm going to the backyard and the tree branches nearly broke our fence. I need to whip (wHip) this yard into shape. =)

And after.

Now that's better. Behave, behave! =)

Now that's better. Behave, behave! =)

I also cleaned up the area between the garage and front door so I could finally setup the waterwheel my dad had made for me last Christmas.  It looks amazing!

After nearly a year I finally setup the waterwheel my dad had lovingly made and given me for Christmas last year. It looks awesome and I received so many compliments from my neighbors. Thank you Dad. =)

At this point the front yard was pretty much done.  It was about 2pm in the afternoon and I had been working since 9 in the morning.  I knew I needed to at least get the weeds whacked down and the lawn mowed in the backyard before I could truly call it a day.  I asked Marshall to move the equipment back there (I was running on fumes so I needed all the help I could get) and in an hour got the backyard done.  Hurray…  so tired, so sleepy, so sore…  😉

For the rest of the evening I chilled out and rested my tired muscles.  I think I fell asleep at 7:30 that night.  Seriously, that was a lot of work.  It was well worth it though as my yard looks really nice now and I can safely enter the rainy season without worrying about a tree branch taking out my fence or the backyard turning into a grass swamp mess.  Until next year!… =)

Oh yeah, and a bonus photo for ya, I also knocked down these wasp/yellowjacket nests from the front porch eaves. “You won’t hurt anyone, ever again!” 😉

Bees!!! Yeah, I knocked these nests down too.

Rose Peak hike with my buddies…

Wow, so yesterday work buddies Mike, Velimir and I embarked on one of the most intense, challenging, and ultimately memorable trips I’ve ever been on.  “V” had scheduled a 20+ mile hike from Del Valle to Rose Peak and despite the 102 degree forecast I knew I wanted to do it.   By the end of the hike I had gained a whole new appreciation for the power (and limitations) of the human body and an individuals ability to push past the pain.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.  Let me start at the beginning.  =)

At 9:45 Mike, Velimir and I met “V” and the rest of the crew at the Lichen Park trailhead parking lot.  It was already warm so we knew proper hydration was going to be key.  I had 2 liters of water with ice, Mike had brought 6 liters (we ended up needing it all), and Velimir had 3 liters in a new Camelbak so we were set to go.  “V” started out the trip by outlining our path which goes something like this “a steep ascent followed by a steep descent followed by another steep ascent and descent then we ascend again to get to Rose Peak.”  Make no mistake, these ascents/descents were major and it’s not like once you get to Rose Peak you’re done.  You’ve got to turn back around and do it all over again to get back.  Onward and upward (and downward)!  😉

"V" outlines the path were were to take.

"V" outlines the path were were to take with his finger while the eager crew looks on. There were 12 of us in total.

The first part of the hike seemed like a lot of uphill but it wasn’t incredibly steep so we were able to “ease” into it.  Along the way Mike and Velimir pointed out several dead deer and of course I had to take pictures of them.  They’re kind of beautiful in a way.

What appears to be a juvenille deer that became a meal for other woodland predators/scavengers.

What appears to be a juvenille deer that became a meal for other woodland predators/scavengers.

While hiking up a steeper portion of the trail I realized how much I disklike hiking in boots.  I tend to hike very fast and power up hills on my toes however that’s nearly impossible in boots.  I was unable to get the correct size of tennis shoes in time for this hike so I was stuck hiking in my super heavy waterproof (ie. super hot).  Oh well, it may have actually been a good thing that I was hiking slower since the heat was seriously zapping everyone’s strength and energy.

"V" and me (gotta love the bandana). ;)

"V" and me. Yeah I know, I'm wearing a bandana. Yar, it drives me nuts (my pirate impression). 😉

After hiking for what seemed like forever we reached the first crest and were treated to a nearly level section to stretch our legs.  Then it was on to the first descent which seriously tested our knees, quads, and footing as it was nearly impossible not to slide down sections of the trail.  Let’s do this!  =)

Mike and Velimir at the second valley in our hike up to Rose Peak.

Mike and Velimir at the bottom of the first valley in our hike up to Rose Peak. Nice hat Velimir. =)

After reaching the base of that first valley we had to hike back up.  About halfway up that climb we encountered a group of equestrians who had camped the night before and said we were the only other hikers they had seen on the trail.  They said they were glad to see us because then they didn’t feel so crazy.  Wait, they’re on horses.  Maybe we are crazy.  Nah…  😉

This was supposed to be the "fun" photo and ended up being the only group photo we ended up with.

The riders offered to take a picture for us which was really nice. This was supposed to be the "fun" photo and ended up being the only group photo we ended up with.

More hiking and about 3 miles from the summit Mike, Velimir and I decided to take a self-shot group photo at nearly the same location as a picture I was in from March.  Velimir is so funny.  He totally directed this shot which was awesome.  =)

Velimir had the great idea that we should all look off into the distance. He's a natural at looking casual. Mike and I look kind of silly. =)

Velimir had the great idea that we should all look off into the distance. He's a natural at looking casual. Mike and I look kind of silly. =)

We were pretty much all smiles although Mike’s crazy calves and quads were starting to cramp up on him.  No one realized how serious the problem was until we were about 20 minutes from the summit and both of Mike’s legs cramped up to the point where he couldn’t walk.  At that point we sat down, forced Mike (he was being obstinate) to eat turkey jerky and drink water.  “V” had said that a lack of salt would result in cramping so it was super important that Mike try and replenish his salt levels.  We sat there for at least 10 minutes and watched Mike’s tortured leg muscles dance in the heat.  Seriously it was insane.  =(

The next thing that happened seemed equally out of this world.  As we were sitting on the side of the trail waiting for Mike’s muscle spasms to subside two horses came running around the corner and approached us with interest.  Velimir and I shoed them off only to have a bull, calf and cow follow their lead and pass right by us.  The horses then turned back to stare down the cows who then charged the horses.  It was like a horse/cow game of tag.  Wow……

Crazy "thestril" horses that materialized out of nowhere. Kinda weird but super cool.

What? Now cows? What do they know that we don't? What monster lurks at Rose Peak?

What? Now cows? What do they know that we don't? What monster lurks at Rose Peak?

Crazy animals. I've never seen cows and horses play tag before.

Crazy animals. I've never seen cows and horses play tag before.

Because we weren’t sure what exactly was going on with Mike’s legs and how long it might take for them to recover Velimir went ahead and hiked to the peak.  At a certain point Mike said, “Let’s go,” and even though you’d think I would have realized his leg situation was pretty serious and say no, I figured if he was going to make it back the remaining 9 miles to the car he could probably make it to the peak.  Stupid logic and now I know better.  You don’t “F” with that kind of stuff.

Half way up the last section of the ascent and about 10 minutes from the peak Mike’s legs completely seized up.  This time I realized the severity of the situation and put down my pack, told Mike to stay down and I headed to the peak to see if anyone was up there.  Nope, they had already headed around the corner to get water from Maggie’s Half Acre.  I ran back to where Mike was and found him still seriously cramping up so I headed back to the last junction to try and find “V” or anyone else from the crew.  Magda, Craig and Rajesh were at the junction and Craig had half a banana so I took that back to Mike and asked Magda to send “V” up when he got back from Maggie’s.

“V” came up about 10 minutes later and saved the day by massaging Mike’s legs so they would finally relax.  At this point “V” realized it would take quite a while for us to make it back so he gave everyone else permission to head back down as long as I could give him and Magda a ride back to Stanford.  Done and done.  =)

While “V” continued to work on Mike’s legs I ran down to the junction with Rajesh to leave Marshall’s phone number so they could call and let him know what was going on when they got within cell phone range.  I was very happy to see that Velimir had joined the group at the junction by this time (apparently he had washed his feet, hands and relaxed at Maggie’s Half Acre so it took him a while to catch up with the rest of the group). so after making sure Rajesh had Marshall’s numberMagda, Velimir and I hiked back

The next 3 hours was spent slowly navigating the steep slopes and taking breaks regularly to let Mike’s cramping legs rest.  When we got the first flat spot we took the opportunity to get a few last pictures before the sun went down.  Still smiling..  =)

Mike, me, and Velimir. Hiking buddies 4 Life man. ;)

Mike, me, and Velimir. Hiking buddies 4 Life man. 😉

Sunset and still about 6 miles to go.

Sunset and still about 6 miles to go.

At about 8:15 with the sun long gone I had an opportunity to call Marshall on Velimir’s iPhone (yes, the iPhone is a quite useful appliance) to let him know we were going to be later than I had originally thought.  Apparently he had not gotten the voice message from Rajesh explaining what had happened so he was a bit worried.  Sorry about that babe.  =)

The rest of the hike was pretty crazy.  Even though it was mostly downhill Mike’s leg cramped incessantly and it didn’t seem like we were getting much closer to our destination.  =(  Fortunately at about 9pm with 2 miles left to go we were relieved to hear the beautiful sound of a pickup truck rumbling up the trail.  Oh thank God, we’re saved!  I guess the other half of the group had let the rangers know that we had an injury in our group so an hour after the park closed they came looking for us.  We all hopped in the back of the truck and enjoyed the dusty and bumpy ride back.  Best hike ever!!  😉

After getting back to the parking lot we parted ways with Velimir and I drove Mike back to the lab and Magda and “V” to Stanford.  It was 11:35 by the time I got home.  A long day but everyone got back safely so all’s well that ends well.  Oh yeah and I got two massive blisters.  So painful.  😉

My injuries were minor yet still painful. This blister appeared to have blistered twice over the course of the hike. Ouch!

Thanks to “V” for being the most awesome hike leader and making sure that we all finished the hike in one piece.  You’re the best!  Looking forward to another great trip soon.  =)

Winnie’s first day of puppy training…

Since it’s been a few years since Heather last had to train a puppy (9 year old Freckles was the last one) she decided to enroll Winnie in puppy school.

While Heather was listening to the instructor, Winnie sought out some good tanbark to chew on. Mmm, tanbark.... =)

While Heather was listening to the instructor, Winnie sought out some good tanbark to chew on. Mmm, tanbark.... =)

I’m a huge fan of the positive reinforcement method of training so I was excited to hear that Heather was going to take Winnie to a class that would use that method to teach dogs to sit, shake, stay and walk nicely on a lead.  It’s amazing how quickly dogs pick up what they’re supposed to do when you quietly reward the for doing the right thing.  =)

Look at how nicely Winnie is sitting and paying attention to Heffies. What a good dog. =)

After both trainer and puppy learned some new tricks the dogs were rewarded with some play time together.  Winnie loved this part and made a new best friend, Kona (black and white Boston Terrier mix).  Kona and Winnie played tag until the instructor called time and they had to leave.  Winnie can’t wait until the next training session to see Kona again.  =)

Finally it was time for puppy play time. Winnie really liked Kona (dog on the right) and played tag for about 15 minutes before it was time to wrap it up. So much fun. =)

Finally it was time to say goodbye and head home.  Winnie did an excellent job at her first day of training and so did Heffies.  Thanks for inviting me to join you guys Heffs.  =)

Jeffery’s new family (Katie and Likus)….

I’m so happy for my little brother.  Nearly a year ago his dog Foxy passed away suddenly and left us all in shock and a hole in our hearts.  Since then he has been looking for a dog like Foxy or ideally, one of her relatives.  Amazingly enough my sister was able to find one of Foxy’s relatives, a 4 year old named Katie, who just had a litter of puppies and needed a new home.  Jeffery eagerly volunteered to adopt her and then found out that he would also be the proud owner of one of her puppies.  =)

Jeffery's new 4 year old named Katie. She's the mother of Likus and Winnie. What a good dog. =)

After reading my buddy’s blog post about cleaning his garage I was inspired (guilted) into doing some housework myself so I pulled out the weedeater and lawnmower to tackle the yard.  😉

I had just about finished when I saw my brother and his new dog Katie round the corner to my house.  I hadn’t met Katie yet but heard she looked a lot like Foxy.  I’ve got to admit, the resemblance is kind of uncanny.  Katie is really beautiful, has a great personality and seems to love my brother already.  It’s really sweet.  =)

After letting me know that there had been a police chase around Springtown today (I totally missed that) Jeffery invited me over to see his new puppy Likus.  On our way over (the sun had already gone down) we saw a police car with search lights searching the creek for whoever they were looking for.  Only a little unsettling.  I still walked back in the dark even though I was half expecting someone to jump out and attack me.  Amazing how sharp your senses are when you’re scared.  Anyway, back to my story.

In 10 minutes we had arrived at my brothers house and upon entering his living room this is what I found….  a Puppy!!!!  =)

Holy crap is this dog cute or what? So cute. =)

Jeffery named his puppy Likus.  I guess because he really likes him?  I didn’t get the story on that name.  I’ll have to ask next time I see him.  Anyway, here’s the proud papa and his new baby.  =)

After hanging out in the backyard for a while (my brother has done a ton of work back there) we headed into the kitchen.  Jeffery’s cat Awesemo immediately hissed at me.  The cat is seriously insane.

About a second after I took this picture Awesamo attacked me and the camera. That cat is vicious man.

Queen for a day…

So after a marathon run of watching “How I Met Your Mother” I invited Heather and Winnie to stay the night as driving home at 12:30am didn’t seem like the best idea in the world.

In the morning Marshall went to get us coffee and spinach wraps (aw, so nice) and Winnie ended up earning a crown out of the whole thing.  Here she casts a disinterested gaze at her subjects (Sierra and Lotus).

It's good to be the queen...

It's good to be the queen...

After tiring of being lazy she discarded her crown in favor of some rough housing with Uncle Marshall.

What Queen Winnie wants, Queen Winnie gets and she wanted to lick Marshall's face as he was trying to play his Nintendo DS.

By the end of the day she was totally worn out and fell asleep like a little baby in my arms.  Until next time Winnie.  We’ll save your crown.  =)

Bad knees…

Ok, an update on the mini-emergency regarding my mom’s swollen knee.  Let me start by saying everything is ok so no need to worry.  =)  And now on to the story.

So Heather and I headed out to Castro Valley to take my mom to Kaiser emergency for treatment and found her laying down in bed doing leg lifts with her good leg with a bag of frozen peas and chicken thighs on her bad knee.  So ridiculous.  😉

I have neither frozen peas or chicken thighs in my freezer. Good thing my mom makes dinners from scratch. =)

At least she's still smiling. I made her laugh by joking that I couldn't tell the difference between her swollen knee and the good one. Ha! =)

After I got my mom to stop doing leg lifts and just relax I asked her how bad her knee hurt.  This was her response.

Ouch, that looks really bad. ;)

Let’s check out the damage.

Yeah, it's swollen all right. Ouch!

Yeah, it's swollen all right. Ouch!

Wait, a second.  I’ve seen those knees before…

Dang it, my knees look nearly as bad as my mom's busted knee. Oh well... =)

Ah well, nothing a little puppy love can’t fix.

Aw, this cute little puppy is enough to make anyone forget about their horribly swollen knees. ;)

Ok, enough pictures, time to get to the hospital.  It was no easy feat (slight pun intended) but we finally got my mom into the Freestyle and to the hospital ok.  Heather went and got a wheelchair for my mom and I parked the car…in Hayward…on the street, not fun.  As I was walking to the emergency doors two large, loud women got into a fight with one throwing her big gulp drink at the other and both yelling profanities at the top of their lungs.  My intention was to ignore them completely but then one started walking towards me shouting, “Oh she saw it, there’s a witness” and other such things.  I walked a bit faster and was very relieved when I made it through the hospital doors.

I let the security guard at the front know and he totally ignored the issue.  Ten minutes later one of the women came in and ended up filing a report and being seen by one of the doctors.  There were 3 security guards at her room and we could hear her sobbing loudly.  Crazy.  I greatly dislike Hayward.

Anyway, other than that everything went well and my mom is now home and resting comfortably.  She’s just got to take it easy.  =)

Freaky deaky dragonfly…

Oh man I totally freaked out with what had apparently had the misfortune of flying into the grill of my Jetta.  Yeah, it was a big-A dragonfly and being the dead animal/insect loving person I am I ran to get my camera to take pictures of it.

Busted dragonfly on the grill of my Jetta. Sorry Dragonfly.

Busted dragonfly on the grill of my Jetta. Sorry dragonfly.

As I was taking photos from different angles and working with the aperture settings I noticed that the dragonfly’s back legs were still moving.  Oh my gosh, oh my gosh!!  And then I noticed that it’s head had somehow moved and was now falling off the grill.

Holy crap! Why is his head falling off the grill? What the hey??

Holy crap! Why is his head falling off the grill? What the hey??

As I was freaking out about the moving leg and now near totally decapitated head the whole thing fell of and onto the ground.  Seriously, I can’t believe I’m taking pictures of (and now blogging about) a dead dragonfly on my Jetta.  Ok, just one last picture, click!

Hmm, he actually looks kind of cool and less freaky deaky now. RIP dragonfly. At least smashing into my sweet-A Jetta was a good way to go. ;)

Heather’s new puppy…

So after my brother’s dog Foxy passed away last year my sister has been on the lookout for a miniature Australian Shepard puppy for him.  Turns out that the she found someone whose dog was going to have a litter but Jeffery ended up liking the mom more than the puppies so the owner sold the mother to Jeffery and gave Heather one of the puppies for free!  =)

I haven’t seen Jeffery’s new dog yet (her name is Katie) but I have gotten to play with Heather’s new puppy (Winnie) and she’s adorable.  She’s only 8 weeks old and is a little pipsqueak.  Check her out.

Oh..my...uh-gosh... SO CUTE!!! =)

That bone is as big as she is! What a cute little muppet head. =)

Seriously, this dog is just too cute. I can't believe that Sierra was once that small.

Ok, how about a little love for your Aunt Jenny…  😉

Puppy Kisses!! Aw... what is this feeling, it's like my heart is on fire. =)

Winnie had an vet appointment on Thursday morning so Heather dropped her off Wednesday evening and we had a lot of fun.  It was great having a puppy in the house again however I’m very, VERY happy with my babies Sierra, Lotus and Javy though.  Speaking of even Javy got to have a little fun with his new cousin.

Aw what a good kitty. That's so nice of you to let Winnie chew on your ear Javy Beans. ;)

Well that’s all the time I have to post for now.  I just found out my mom’s knee swelled up pretty bad so Heffies and I are going to take her to the hospital.  I’ll write more later…

Sierra’s first foxtail….

So when I came home at lunch to let the dogs out to use the backyard (Lotus is lame on her back right leg so we have to keep her indoors) I found Sierra shaking her head like she had something in her ear.  Boo…  =(

Marshall and I are leaving for Hawaii Sunday night so I couldn’t afford to wait and see if Sierra could shake out whatever was in her ear.  Fortunately I was able to take her in to be seen by the vet and sure enough, she had gotten a foxtail in her ear that had started to put pressure on her ear drum.  Aw, my poor Muppy!

I guess we got off easy. Only $180 to remove a 1" foxtail.

Well after a couple hours at the vet they were able to remove the foxtail and for the first time in a couple days, Sierra seemed extremely happy to see me when I came to pick her up.  I should drop her off at the vet more often.  😉

Loving my new camera (and my baby dog). Muppy!!! =)

New career (fixing washing machines)…

So this last weekend while Marshall was at work I figured I’d attempt to do some laundry in addition to some much needed yardwork.  The yardwork ended early when I ripped a hole in my hand (see earlier post) and much to my dismay so did the laundry when I received an error code indciating the washer wouldn’t drain.  Dang it!!

I attempted to find repair instructions online and although several posts looked promising, I couldn’t figure out how to remove the front panel to get to the drain.  After promising my buddy Mike that I would call a repairman tonight if I couldn’t it out myself I realized the pressure was on.  I do NOT want to pay for something I can do myself.  Plus there’s my “fix-it-yourself” pride to think about as well.  😉

Fortunately I found this link which has excellent instructions for troubleshooting and fixing the problem I was having.  Sweet!  For anyone else who is thinking about attempting this and would feel more comfortable seeing what it’s all about, here you go.  =)

This is what all the fuss was about (missing piece at bottom of washer otherwise known as the “front panel”). I figured I could handle things once I got the front panel off, I just couldn’t figure out where the screws were. FYI, the screws are at the very bottom of the washer and require a 6.5mm socket and extender to get to.

Don't mind the mess around the washer (or the clothes that have been sitting in stale water since Sunday). "Oh, that's Naaasty" - Cleveland from Family Guy

Place a bag under the drain before removing the plug as you will have about 2-3 gallons of water drain from an undrained load of laundry.  Warning, if you’ve let this sit a couple days like I did this water will stink and stink bad.  Fortunately my nose is pretty well desensitized to wicked bad stenches as our dog Lotus has been sprayed by a skunk twice in the last month.  =)

Place a bag under the drain before removing the plug as you will have about 2-3 gallons of water drain from an undrained load of laundry.

A plastic bag works great for collecting the excess water left in the washer bin.

Once the water is drained, squeeze the black tube connected to the drain to see if any socks or other debris have become stuck. I used channel locks to easily compress the metal clip around the tube in order to disconnect the hose from the drain.  I wanted to make sure nothing was lodged in one of the joints where I couldn’t detect it from the outside.  Nothing stuck here so on to checking the drain filter.

Squeeze the black tube connected to the drain to see if any socks or other debris have become stuck. Nothing stuck here, on to drain filter.

There's a lot more room to work on a washing machine than a V6 Jetta thankfully. I was amazed that it was actually relatively easy to reach everything. =)

Wow, amazingly enough a bobby pin and rope pieces from one of Lotus’s dog toys managed to get through the drain plug and get stuck in the filter. Fortunately I was able to remove the debris before the motor burned out.

Disconnected black hose directly behind drain with nasty bobby pin and rope debris puled from the housing of the filter (see small hole between main drain and pump assembly).

Ok, that was the hard part.  Now to put everything back together again (ideally with no extra parts).  😉

Reattaching the black hose to the drain after confirming nothing was stuck in it.

After clearing the hoses and filter it was time to screw in the drain plug and reinstall the front panel.

Looks good.  But will it work??  Profit!!  =)

Hurray! 33 minutes left on my whites... mmm, clean socks... =)

Thanks to Rhondacat at www.fixya.com for her post on how to fix this problem.  Awesome info.  You saved me a repair bill and bruise to my ego.  😉

Super happy about fixing my washing machine. Chalk another one up to Jettagirl. Watch out yard, I'm coming for you next. ;)

Yard 1, Jenny none…

Ok so I thought I’d actually try and be a responsible homeowner today and work on my yard.  Hey everyone else is building sheds and mowing lawns and cornholing so I figured I’d get in on the excitement.  😉

There are all these nasty dandelion weeds in the backyard which end up getting stuck in Sierra’s fur and then end up sticking me when I pet her or worse, end up in the bed and I roll over them in the middle of the night.  =P  So after a relaxing and fun day yesterday I figured I’d pull out the shovel, throw on my furry boots and head out to tackle the nightmare that is my backyard.

Although I couldn’t find my gardening gloves I figured I’d still be ok with my tough elephant skin.  Well, let’s just say I vastly underestimated my own strength combined with a lack of gloves and after only 20 minutes ended up shearing off a good portion of my palm.  Lame!!

Do you know how difficult it is to get a picture of your own hand? I felt like I was playing Twister with myself.

Yep, my skin totally wussed out and decided to separate from my muscly hand. Boo... =(

So yeah, I guess I won’t be doing the same amount of yardwork that I had originally planned but I’m not giving up yet.  You may have won this round yard but I’ve got your number.  Just wait…  😉

I guess I can at least pick up the dead weeds I managed to kill. So lame, seriously. =P

Unwrapping the past: My visit with King Tut…

The year 1979 is significant for multiple reasons including it being the year Sony introduced the Sony Walkman, the year my parents introduced me to the world (ie. I was born), and it was the last time the treasures of King Tutankhamun’s tomb had been on display in San Francisco.  Quite a year, I know.  😉

I’ve always been fascinated by Egyptian history, especially the story of King Tut the boy king who died unexpectedly and mysteriously at the age of 19.  I remember making and painting a plaster model of his death mask and seeing pictures of all the treasures uncovered at his tomb.  I never thought I would have the opportunity to see these items in person.  Although the death mask was not on exhibit I still got chills viewing the artwork and images that were created over 3,200 years ago.  It was amazing…  =)

But I’m getting ahead of myself.  There was a whole lot of adventure to be had before we even got to the museum.  Let me start at the beginning.  Marshall and I had decided to take BART into the city and that was a great choice because traffic and parking looked like it would have been a nightmare in Golden Gate Park.

Marshall and me at the beginning of our journey to the city. Happy smiles all around. =)

Marshall and me at the beginning of our journey to the city. Happy smiles all around. =)

On the train to San Francisco a girl across from us suddenly started crying.  Then she stopped crying, then she started again and it seemed to be that whatever was causing her to cry was something very deep, like maybe she had just learned a family member had died.  Everyone ignored her crying (which seemed like the right thing to do) so I didn’t feel guilty about that but I did feel guilty about that fact that I couldn’t help silently trying to analyze the situation.  She had a tattoo with the name “Reese” on her neck and a tattoo on her arm that looked like it said “Thug For Life” and yet she was coming from the Dublin BART and was headed to the city.  Hmm… well I’m sorry for trying to analyze her life and hope she finds comfort for whatever was upsetting her.

After making it to San Francisco we had to transfer to Muni.  This was actually a lot easier than I would have thought however we screwed up the first part by getting on an inbound train instead of outbound so we had to get off at Embarcadero and then turn around to get on N-Judah outbound.  Thank goodness for good maps and friendly people on the train who informed us about the inbound/outbound designations.  =)

I'm so glad they had this map. Even with relatively good directions Marshall and I still ended up getting on the "inbound" (ie. wrong) train to go to the deYoung museum.

Next we weren’t sure about when the Muni bus/train would stop so Marshall pulled the “Stop Request” cable when he thought we were approaching our exit and we ended up getting dropped off about 4 blocks too early.  No worries though, I wore tennis shoes so walking was no problem.  =)

Finally after a nice stroll through the park we had reached our destination, the deYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park.  Hurray!  I was so excited that I started chanting “King Tut, King Tut, King Tut..” as we approached the entrance.  Unfortunately my excitement was not to last as we were told upon entering that tickets were sold out until 5pm.  =(  But wait, a guy standing near the ticket counter said he had two tickets for 1pm (30 minutes away) that he’d sell for $30/ea.  I’m always suspicious of these kinds of transactions though so I told Marshall that we’d just leave and try another day…  (wipe away tear).  As we were walking out and I was saying how disappointed I was Marshall said, “you know what, let’s go back.  We can wait.”  Hurray!  Now I’m happy again.  =)

Hurray! We're going to see King Tut (or at least a number of priceless artifacts recovered from his tomb). I got goosebumps going through the exhibit.

This time when Marshall went to get the tickets, the guy at the counter said, “Wait, do you have cash?  If so, you should buy from this guy and then you can get in right away.”  Sweet!  An endorsement from the actual museum guys so that makes it official.  Two tickets please.  =)

The exhibit was absolutely amazing.  We also paid the $7/person for the audio tour which really helped me to take in all the information.  Apparently I’m more an auditory learner so this worked out well (and I didn’t even have to laugh to remember it).  😉

After going through the exhibit and purchasing a $50 book on the exhibit and history of King Tut (I couldn’t help myself, I love these kinds of books) we headed up to the tower and were treated to panoramic views of the city.  Awesome!

A view of the Music Concourse from the tower of the deYoung museum. The roof was very cool as it was covered in plants and odd domes with what appeared to be portholes on them.

Then it was down to the gardens where I got to check out what appeared to be prehistoric plants and elegant floating lilies.  I would have spent a ton more time at the museum but unfortunately Marshall was dying from carrying a heavy bag (we traded off briefly and yeah it was super heavy) and he was hungry so we headed back to the Embarcadero for a bowl of clam chowder and salty sea air.

Super leathery dinosaur plants. Cool!

On the way back to catch Muni we ran into this restaurant.  As hungry as we were, we were saving our appetites for clam chowder.  Gurgle, growl…. Ok, we better hurry up.

That's right. While I was in San Francisco I decided to open my own burger joint. I considered calling it "Tempjen Burger" but then decided to just use my full name. ;)

Man I love that stuff.  We always go to “Chowders” on the pier.  I like it a lot more than the clam chowder in Monterey although that is good too.  =)  After feeding our stomach’s we headed out to the viewing stations and were lucky enough to catch a view of this crazy powerboat taking off into the choppy waters of the bay.  It looked totally dangerous to me but I guess that’s part of the attraction.  I like the colors.  =)

Just as we were coming out to the pier this speedboat took off with a bunch of rowdy passengers aboard. I'd never seen anything like it.

Then a picture of us with Alcatraz lurking in the background (we’ll have to go visit Alcatraz next time we go to the city as I love its lore as well).

A nice passerby offered to take our picture. How nice. =)

And then an obligatory picture of the seals.  I don’t remember that sign last time I was there.  I guess that’s like proof that the sea lions you took pictures of were actually genuine Pier 39 seals.  “We’re the real deal!” – Sally Sea Lion

Pier 39 seals. They reminded me of Sierra when a few of them rolled over on their backs with their heads upside down.

At this point it was getting a little chilly and a little late.  We still had a long ride home on BART and both of us were exhausted from a full day of play.

I still had a bit of energy left in me so I had some fun attempting to climb and then balance on top of these rope hitches and then took more pictures.  It’s really beautiful over there.  =)

Practicing my mad balancing skills (I still fell off). =)

Apparently the walk from Pier 39 to BART is only 1.4 miles but at this point my feet were killing me.  Seriously I guess I need to go with size 9.5 shoes next time.  =P

And because I’ve always seen it but have never gone to check it out, Marshall and I crossed the street early to get a closer look at this modern art structure.  I didn’t realize it but you can actually climb stairs up and through the structure was was really cool.  Totally worth the little detour.

I've seen this structure every time I've walked from BART to the Embarcadero but never checked it out. It's actually really cool and you can take stairs up to get a birds-eye view of it all.

So all in all a super cool trip.  We got a little lost, had some aches and pains with all the walking but had a great time.  Thanks for the great trip Marshall.  =)

NLIT 2009….

Ok, this post is way overdue but I didn’t want to let that stop me from blogging about a great trip I had to Knoxville, Tennessee for the 2009 National Laboratories IT Summit (we can’t call it a conference for expense purposes apparently).  =)

This was my 4th NLIT Summit and as always I learned a lot, met some very cool people and also had a great time enjoying the social events that had been planned for the attendees.  The first event was a 5K race that was scheduled to start at 3pm (the same time we got off our flight) that my friend Jean Shuler and I somehow managed to make by racing to the hotel in a taxi, checking in real quick and then doing what can only be described as “speed-changing” in order to get back downstairs to the lobby where we met up with the race coordinators who waited until 3:45 so we could join them.  =)

Still feeling good after about jogging about 1.25 miles in the sun.

I was super tired after getting up at 2 in the morning to catch my flight only to sit on a plane for half the day but that did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm for a little afternoon exercise along the river.  Great idea guys!  I had a blast.  =)

I really loved the scenery in Tennessee especially along the river. Here you see train tracks that continue on under the Gay St. bridge (I walked across it on Wednesday before my flight home).

After settling in and getting to check out the vendors who helped sponsor the event (thanks for the free drinks guys) it was time to get to bed.  I had a full day of presentations to look forward to and wanted to be well rested in order to be able to take it all in.  =)

Listening to a presenation on CFEngine use at Brookhaven National Lab.

The first day of presentations were excellent.  After the last presentation ended there was a quick happy hour and then it was on to the Sunsphere for dinner and cocktails.  So awesome…  =)

Tuesday morning I woke up a bit tired but ready to take on another day of presentations.  Unfortunately even though I had been responsible with my drinking I quickly realized that my lip which had gotten super sunburned at the NIF dedication the Friday before had totally exploded and was oozing nastiness which made it difficult for me to find the courage to leave my hotel room.  =(

Fortunately I didn’t let myself wallow in self-pity too long so I only missed one presenation before heading downstairs to join the others.

Good lab buddies Mark Dietrich (pretending to be asleep), Jean Shuler and always funny, Lee Neely.

After this round of presentations it was off to the Womens’ Basketball Hall of Fame for more food, drinks and a friendly game of H-O-R-S-E.  😉

Admitedly one of my favorite parts of the summit is the social networking and evening entertainment. Keep those drink tickets coming. ;)

After things closed down around 10pm a couple of us (Pete – guy who beat me multiple times at HORSE and David – guy from Brookhaven Lab who has done some awesome stuff implementing high availability for BIND servers) went down to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse to enjoy the evening air and hang out a bit longer.  I was good and had water instead of a cranberry vodka (I guess I’m getting old) so I was still wide awake when midnight rolled around.  At that point David and I walked back to the hotel to continue our conversation about using Heartbeat to do load-balancing using IPtables.  Ah, that’s what I love about these conferences, uh, I mean summits.  😉

The next morning was the last day of the summit.  Instead of a having a typical CIO panel the ORNL hosts had planned a game of CIO Survivor where CIOs from 5 of the national laboratories competed for applause based on their ideas of how to “go green” at their laboratories.  I liked the CIO from Jefferson Lab who provided a compelling case for considering nuclear power to solve our energy problems.  Unfortunately the CIO from the National Renewable Energy Laborartory thought it appropriate to interrupt his speeches with rude comments and props that played to people’s fear of anything nuclear.  Too bad.  I think the crowd still liked him a lot better.  =)

The last presentation I went to was quite interesting and aside from the great technical information that was provided it made me appreciate how much people like Barry Finkel have to offer even if their outward appearance suggests something else.  =)

This guy was so cute! He gave a presentation on the GNU mailman implementation he planned for Argonne National Lab. He used an old school pointer and everything. =)

After the last presentation I had a couple hours to kill before having to leave to catch my flight.  I spent that time exploring downtown Knoxville including a trip across the Gay St. bridge and into a slightly sketchy area, swimming in the hotel pool with some guys from Idaho National Laboratory, and reflecting on everything I had learned and experienced on this trip.  All in all it was pretty awesome.  I can’t wait for next year’s (Brookhaven National Lab in New York!).  Also a big thank you to whoever took and posted these pictures.  I didn’t bring my camera and was very appreciative to have pictures to remember my trip.  =)
